The recent debate on limiting the MCA presidency to two or three terms ought to be debated.

It is my view that the term of all leaders, including the prime minister, cabinet ministers and leaders of all political parties (including the opposition) should be limited to a single term. In Sabah, the rotation system has not sunk the state.

This may be a key to resolving widespread corruption and favouritism, which sparks the grab for riches. Of course, the cynical would assert that without this or that particular person, the sun would never rise.

If this proposal sees the light of the day, I am fairly convinced that the country may progress. It may provide optimism for future leadership.

It took someone with the stature of South African President Nelson Mandela, who guided and steered his country out of the hurt of apartheid, to keep his promise to not hold on to the reins for more than one term. What statesmanship he displayed, unlike others who remain politicians forever.

Malaysians never went through the pain and suffering that South Africans experienced. Mandela himself was robbed of the prime of his life. May be all our political leaders can take a cue from him.

As human beings we do not live forever. Invariably we have to pass the baton one day.

I am still trying to search (the MCA records) for the one leader with the courage to leave. Iit appears there are none. (Former deputy president) Lim Ah Lek may be an exception.
