All over the world cartoons are accepted as a sharp and vivid kind of political criticism. All those used to Zunar's cartoons can see that they are such - sharp political criticism meant to shake up those concerned so they realise the general public opinion about them.

Political cartoons are not necessarily the artist's personal view, they are normally based on the artist's observation of the current public opinion on certain issues.

All over the world, we see cartoons depicting the leaders of many countries in controversial situations, but we don't see them making big 'hoo haa' as seen in this instance of Zunar's cartoon published in the PAS organ Harakah . The noise over the cartoon only reflects the narrow-mindedness of those in Malaysian politics.

Cartoons are cartoons, they are after all just a work of art, open to various interpretations. I see no reason for Harakah to retract or to apologise. By doing so Harakah has conceded to a narrow-minded interpretation of his work.

Zunar's cartoons have always portrayed the prime minister with an extra large nose, bearing no similarity with a pig's snout. In this instance, the similarity between the word SAR and Sars, and the spelling of the prime minister's name with the 'zir', reflects his sharp observation. This is employed by political artists all over, which gives their drawing 'oomph'.

As MGG Pillai rightly said, somebody in Umno is using the cartoon for political advantage, to put down the PM. Harakah and Zunar being in the opposition, it is normal for them to attack leader of the government.

But it is unbecoming of those in Umno who choose to use the cartoon and then blame Harakah and Zunar for it. These Umno members are the type who lempar batu sembunyi tangan .

Zunar, Harakah , reformists and members of the opposition are open in their criticism of government leaders, for that is what it should be in a democratic country. Those in BN who stab their own leaders in the back should not be allowed to sully the political environment.

To Zunar, I say syabas and continue with your drawing without fear - we need more like you to shake up those in power so that they know of their responsibility to the people. Reformasi!
