It is scary to note the approach of Umno leaders to an issue. At the recent Umno general assembly, Puteri Umno chief Azalina Othman Said showed her true colours when she called for the burning of the Harakah building in her reaction to Zunar's cartoon .

This reminds me of the party's deputy Youth chief Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir, who stood right on the wall of the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall during a demonstration a few years back and threatened to burn the building in protest of Suqiu's 17-point demand.

When malaysiakini published a reader's letter early this year, Umno Youth lodged a police report. As a result, malaysiakini's operations were almost crippled as the police seized 14 personal computers and five servers from the office.

If MCA is said to have been infected by triad culture, I wonder what Umno's culture is about. Perhaps 'samseng' culture fits Umno well.

The description fits not only its leaders who enjoy making seditious remarks (such as calls "to soak the Malay keris in Chinese blood"), but also reflects Umno's mentality.

With such remarks from Umno leaders, it is not surprising that young Malays, especially the educated ones, are shying away from the party.

It is not too difficult to imagine what would happen if a PAS leader had made a comment like Azalina's. Definitely, there will be people like Ibrahim Ali who will lodge a police report the next day that the remarks were seditious.

Malaysian police would once again prove to the world that they are 'above world standards' by raiding the person's house, traumatising the family and arresting the person - all within the next 24 hours.

As for the party president Dr Mahathir Mohamad, he can go very low when addressing the Umno crowd because he knows that most of those inside or outside Dewan Merdeka are simple people.

Thus, he can make fun of hudud law with silly reasoning, and still get delegates to react by terangguk-angguk (nodding).

Perhaps the 2,000 delegates at the assembly have forgotten Anwar and what Mahathir has done to him. Mahathir is right, Melayu mudah lupa !

But it is only applicable to Melayu Umno.
