Is it just me, or have the standards of the local police force taken a turn for the worse since the rise of reformasi ?

Wasn't it only a few years ago when you could still find decent, civilised, polite and coherent cops with whom you could engage in intelligible conversation?

Back in the 1970s, I remember coming across several constables who actually studied the Malaysian Penal Code while on duty. I could quiz them on different crimes and they would find the legislation for it. I wonder if such is still possible today.

All the cops I knew then had at least a third-grade pass in the SPM. Constables with SRP qualifications were unheard of.

That was then. These days, I've been told that even people with Standard Six 'qualifications' are accepted into the police force. How true is this?

In order to improve the police force and bring it back to its former glory, you must start with the basics - a good education is the best foundation. Familiarity with the Penal Code is an absolute must for all ranks. How else can you call yourself an officer of the law otherwise?

Cynics often joke that the only difference between a cop and a criminal is that one wears the uniform and the other is behind bars.

I believe that it is not too late for the police to rise above the rot and act in a fair and just manner. It all boils down to whether or not they want to seize the many opportunities available and make the change.
