I had finished watching 'Minority Report' on DVD before I logged onto malaysiakini as part of my usual routine before going to bed. I was not sure that I should be glad or sad for what I read on malaysiakini regarding the Instant Caf Theater (ICT) incident.

In 'Minority Report' there was this argument for preventing crime before it happens with the help of the pre-cognitives - those with the special gift of witnessing murders before they happen.

Should we be glad that we do not have to wait until 2054 because we already have a 'pre-crime'department in KL City Hall (DBKL) issuing summonses to ICT and banning all future performances of 'future profanity'.

I am not sure if the pre-cogs in DBKL are the children of parents with drug abuse history as in 'Minority Report'. If no drugs were involved, then Malaysia Boleh! Teh tarik and nasi lemak can already produce pre-cog kids!

But there is one important point in the movie. No matter how technically superior or flawless the pre-crime system was, it was still subjected to manipulation to someone's advantage. In the case of DBKL, I wonder how technically superior they are. I would rather buy the manipulation theory.

I am definitely sad that the authority has again proven its intolerance for alternative views. Who elected - oops, we don't have local elections in Malaysia, so let me rephrase - who 'asked' DBKL to be our moral guardians?

I have something called 'the brain' inside my skull to help me rationalise what is good and bad. I don't have to ask DBKL. It is hard enough in Malaysia to openly discuss current issues in healthy manner, due to the country's appalling record of human rights (please read the websites of malaysiakini , or Suaram, Hakam and other human rights organisations).

With ICT, at least I had to chance to laugh at issues and then put some thought to them later.

Well, I will definitely have to adapt the life without ICT if they cannot perform in the future. But resistance is not futile yet!

ICT should strive on while resisting assimilation by a Borg Cube called DBKL! There are better things outside the Boleh Matrix...
