Asian benchmark for acceptable art much narrower
In response to Olifant's letter 'Can't handle satire? Get out of the theatre', I would like to say a few things.
The examples of religious lampooning in the name of art - which Olifant quotes - are all in the context of the Judaeo-Christian West.
The last time I checked, Malaysia is definitely Asian, and Muslim to top it off. In our Muslim dominated culture, the respect of religion is held primary over some poorly tasting satire.
We are not the West. If Olifant cannot accept our social norms based on Asian and Muslim values - then he or she is free to migrate to the West where religion is fair game for a cheap laugh.
I find such art-form to be absurd and disrespectful of the sensitivities of others. As a Muslim I am horrified with Olifant's attitude.
