Low wages force women into sex trade
I am disturbed by the July 27 report in the frontpage of Ahad Metro . It is shocking to learn that young Malay Muslim women are turning to prostitution.
I blame the government squarely for this dilemma. The refusal of the government to set minimum wage legislation is at the root of the problem. Surely the government cannot expect single mothers (divorcees) to raise children on a mere RM450 a month (a factory workers' wage).
This is simply shameful. It is deplorable because it represents a failure of our education system. Ever since the privatisation of education in Malaysia, parents of Malay girls in the kampung cannot afford the exorbitant rates that colleges charge.
Not everyone is Ivy League material and can get scholarships. The privatisation of education was done for the benefit of greedy government cronies looking for avenues to make millions.
Who suffers? The rakyat . Worse of all, the government is unable to arrest Malay-Muslim prostitutes because there is no other alternative for them to earn a decent living. Simply disgraceful! Umno has let the Malays down.
