I can only sympathise with David's position . Corruption is all-pervasive. I was to renew the road tax on my vehicle when told that there were summons to be settled.

On further inquiry I found that the summons were issued in 1993 - over 10 years ago. All these years I have had no problems renewing my road tax.

I then scrutinised the summons. The vehicle number was wrong. Nevertheless, I recalled the incident.

I went to the police station and was told that the offence could be compounded for RM170. I agreed to this but asked if I would be given a receipt for RM170. To this I was told that the receipt will only be for RM100. I then paid the RM300 due and walked out.

I could only accept philosophically that I was meant to lose money and not let this be another avenue to compromise my convictions. There are many simple, hardworking and honest Malaysians who just are unable to believe what is happening.

The latest Anti-Corruption Agency clearance of Mr Ling and his son for having RM1.2 billion - that is, one thousand two hundred million - just takes the cake.

Even superstars like Andre Agassi would not be able to amass such wealth and we have people in high positions defending the indefensible. Many of us fear that if we went to the ACA, there will be enough leaks to protect those in power.

The sad reality is, people in power know what is happening but they are caught in a web to do anything about it. The nexus between power, money and the authorities is just too strong.
