Government owes us our liberty
I write in response to Shahrizad Akashah's letter titled ' Broad-based alliance needed to fight racism ' .
In her letter, she claims that "liberty is not delivered but has to be worked for". I am a Malaysian. I currently reside in the United States. In the US, the Declaration of Independence as written by Thomas Jefferson states that:
"...all men (and women) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Please note that liberty is an unalienable right endowed upon humankind. It is not something that needs to be "worked for" or earned.
As a Malaysian, I do hope to return home one day. But I sincerely hope to return to a Malaysia where liberty is a right of all citizens, not something that needs to be "worked for".
