I am a Malaysian working in Jakarta. I travel frequently back to Malaysia, sometimes via Singapore's Changi Airport, sometimes via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

I read in all the major Malaysian papers reporting that our Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi complaining about slipshod maintenance of our national buildings, and he specifically pointed out dirty toilets in KLIA. I share his feeling.

KLIA is hardly a few years old, but each time when I go into the toilet, I really feel ashamed of it. How can a new airport's toilets come to such a sad and dilapidated state, with urine stains in many urinals and wash basins hardly cleaned?

Take a look at the Changi Airport in Singapore which is many years older than KLIA; the toilets are almost spotlessly clean and smell good. I always try to make a comparison, what is lacking is our airport management who hardly or rarely care about regular maintenance but always boast of our airport as the newest in this part of the world.

I am sure those from the KLIA senior management do travel to Changi and use the toilets; they should be ashamed of themselves. Even some of the Jakarta airport toilets are cleaner. Come and take a look, please.

Now that Abdullah has made a public and open complaint, will something be done? Or the toilets will be clean for the next few weeks, then left to rot again.

We have the tallest building in the world (now surpassed by Taiwan's Building 101), we made the biggest flag, tallest flag post, longest firecrackers, biggest airport in Southeast Asia, but this is not something we should really proud of. There are more to these.
