The recent announcement by Ahmad Qorei on his intention to resign as prime minister of the Palestinian Authority (PA), I hope, will persuade Disappointed to change his mind on who really is the stumbling block to peace in the Israelis/Palestinian Conflict. First it was Mahmoud Abbas and now Ahmad Qorei.

I used to think like him as well but having read more about the history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, I began to realise that the problem is much more complicated than just blaming Sharon (the Israeli prime minister) or the United States for supporting the Israelis.

If Disappointed is really interested in knowing more about the roots of the conflict he should go into the website cnn.com and read it with an open heart.

Successive Israeli governments have tried to resolve the conflict with Yasser Arafat and all had failed. Before Sharon, there were Edhuk Barak and Benjamin Netanyahu. So if Sharon is the cause of the problem, then what about the rest ?

The US has always been criticised for supporting the Israelis but what about those countries that have been secretly providing arms and money to the PA and other terrorist groups responsible for all the suicide bombings ?

Countries like Syria and Iran, for instance. It is a known fact that both the Islamic Jihad and Hamas have offices in Damascus.(source: www.economist.com).

The whole world has been unanimous in condemning the Israelis for their blatant incursions into Palestinian territories, target assinations and also annexing Palestinian land in the West Bank and Gaza.

But, sad to say, no Muslim country has to date come up and criticise the suicide bombers for targeting innocent civilians (including women and children). To be fair, Israeli soldiers had also killed many Palestinian women and children but this is not part of their rules of engagement.

This is unlike the suicide bombers whose main intention is to kill innocent civilians as part of their strategy.

What 9/11 and the suicide bombers have done is to change the rules of engagement in the world. In other words, no government is safe no matter how powerful you are militarily. All the missiles, tanks, aircraft carriers, fighter planes etc are useless against this kind of warfare.

The US government may be accused of being paranoid but don't forget, they may not necessarily be the first victim. What then is there to prevent a suicide bomber from detonating a nuclear bomb in New York , Moscow, Paris or even London? Incredible? To us maybe but not the West.

I remember a speech made by the world famous investor Warren Buffet shortly after 9/11. In one of the dinners attended by all the top corporate leaders of America, that was precisely the scenario he envisaged. ie. one day suicide bombers may just denote nuclear bombs in American cities as part of their war against the US.

The world is no longer safe after 9/11. Because of all these suicide attacks, the whole intention of which is to kill innocent civilians, the super-powers are also changing their rules of engagement by legitimising pre-empt strikes.

And each successful attacks will only increase the resolve of those countries that are more powerful militarily to use greater force against the perpetrators. Therefore, the justification for using suicide bombing to fight a more powerful enemy is not only futile but will also lead to more sufferings and death of innocent civilians.

The majority of the people of the world support the Palestinians. But with every suicide bombing, they are losing more and more support because the world cannot tolerate this kind of warfare. The superpowers also cannot allow suicide bombing to succeed in achieving its objective.

So, I think is about time the Palestinian Authority change their strategy before it is too late.

For a start, Yasser Arafat should step down. He is a good leader but after so many years, he has not been achieve the ultimate dream of the Palestinian people. It is time for him to step down and let a new leader take over.

Furthermore, he has also lost credibility not only with the Israelis, but also the US and to a certain extent, the EU.

Secondly, the PA should try to get closer to the US rather than their neighbours. All of them have a mutual hatred against Israel but since the later is too powerful, they would rather the Palestinian fight them. They may be their Arab brothers and share a common religion, but there is always suspicions and mistrusts amongst themselves.

In any case, most of them are having so much domestic problems of their own that they cannot even help themselves, let alone, help the Palestinian people. As for the rest of the super-powers, they are just not interested in getting involve because there is no benefit forthcoming. Therefore, the only country that can help them is the US.

Lastly, the PA must make a genuine attempt to stop all these suicide bombing. Don't give the Israelis an excuse to steal your land in the name of security.

The PA cannot fight against a stronger foe and win through violence. Their only hope is through negotiation with the help of the US, United Nation and also the support of the world. There is no doubt that the Palestinian people have suffered long enough and that they deserve a country of their own.

But they must also show the world that they are a responsible government and are willing to respect International Law. Only then will they be able to achieve their dream. It doesn't matter if Israel flagrantly breaks international law. They will be judged...by the world and ultimately...by God.
