I would like to give my comment on the remarks made by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the recent Organisation of Islamic Conference meeting. His remarks have opened the floodgates to discussion over the concept of: "holding the reigns of power by proxy".

Does this concept also exist in Malaysia? I believe this to be so. I have always suspected Umno to be nothing more of a proxy for the rich and greedy. The truth is that Umno leaders and their families have been made 'sleeping directors' of companies in Malaysia, acting as proxies.

They are given monthly remunerations for their roles. There are Umno politicians who even hold directorships in gambling companies. Many Umno politicians are directors of companies with shares in breweries.

How can Umno politicians have the interest of Malaysians at heart when they are busy making themselves millionaires from positions of proxy? How is Umno going to ban unhealthy vices in Malaysia if they are busy getting rich from immoral activities?

Power by proxy exists in Malaysia as well. Is Badawi willing to clean up the mess or is he going to be just another corrupt proxy of the rich and greedy in Malaysia?
