I have been reading the letters in malaysiakini for the past few days, and I must say, some of the letters in here are very interesting, especially the letters ' Grouses of a 17-year-old student ' and ' And I'm 19 years old '.

It certainly proves that there are youths in our beloved Malaysia, like Patriotic School Leaver and Vishven Chandran, who have the courage to speak up and speak out by giving voice to their dissatisfaction of the Malaysian education system. They are unlike many other students; also products of our country's education system, who choose instead to blindly accept everything that is force-fed to them.

Yes, I am also a product of the education system of Malaysia, and I have to agree with Patriotic School Leaver. Why on earth do we have to study moral studies? It's just a redundant subject where the entire paper in the SPM examination is merely based on memorising 80 so-called ' nilai-nilai moral ' (moral values) on three sheets of paper given to us, and then regurgitating these ' nilai-nilai moral ' out again during the final exam.

Also, there is a very strict method on how the students can answer the Moral exam questions, for any other method will result in the entire question being marked wrong, even though the answer makes complete, bloody sense. Tell me, if the term 'Moral Studies' as defined by our education system has such a narrow definition, why bother having this subject in the first place? Considering that all other methods written down by the student is wrong anyway.

As Patriotic School Leaver wondered in his second letter, "Why don't we ask criminals in jail now? Would Moral Studies have done anything to change their decision at the time they committed the crime?"

Okay, here's the situation. What if we have this criminal in jail that can answer the Moral Studies paper flawlessly and get an A1 in Moral Studies? Does this mean that he is a person with a higher level of morality compared to the rest of us who struggle even to pass this subject, but then end up faring much better compared to this criminal wasting his life away in some prison? I wonder about that myself.

Like anywhere else in the country, just like the Moral Studies paper, alternate views are not welcomed at all. In fact, they are shunned and instead, if your alternate views are deemed a threat to the country, you will be put away for the rest of your life, living the rest of your wasted existence in solitary confinement for speaking out the truth.

What happened to the rhetoric 'stand up and be counted' and 'express ourselves'? I say that these 'free speech' or so called "not-so-free speech" rhetoric is a feeble attempt to show the world that our beloved country somehow does allow free speech. Who are we fooling but ourselves?

In response to Muhammad Abdullah's letter , he seems very, very amazed that a product of the Malaysian education system displayed an exceptional command of the English language, and then says "Oh, maybe the education is not that bad after all, considering that even 17-year-old students are so fluent in written English."

Well, Mr Abdullah, sir, I can only say that your narrow-mindedness is very astonishing. You will be rudely surprised that many students, bumiputera and non-bumiputera, all products of the education system are very fluent in English.

I can assure you that if a student relies only upon the present education system to try to master the English language, he or she will be in very serious trouble in the future.

Patriotic School Leaver and Vishven Chandran have made it known to everybody who have graced malaysiakini 's letters section the terrible flaws plaguing our education system, and it is certainly hard to believe that the youth of modern Malaysia are in fact, capable of such opinions, isn't it Mr Muhammed Abdullah?

In my humble opinion, I think that Abdullah is complacent with the present education system, and he finds it unbelievable and possibly disturbing that the youth of Malaysia are no longer finding it acceptable to have nonsense shoved in our faces and expect us to obey everything we are told.

Judging by his reply, the present education system is indeed effective in turning our youth into mindless, obedient sheep.

Who says the system is not effective?
