Lately, malaysiakini has been flooded with non-bumiputeras who are either expressing their discontentment with the present system of bumiputera-favouritism or condemning PAS for its pro-Islam, pro-Malay policies.

While recognising that their complaints and dissatisfaction are fully-justified, I am beginning to find these Malaysians to be a group of disorganised and disgruntled lot.

While Malays who have become increasingly hostile against the Umno-led government are successful at organising themselves politically and displaying their protest by expressing their support for the Muslim-led PAS, a large number of these disgruntled non-bumiputeras are still voting for the parties that are continuing to support policies which are suppressing their rights.

Political apathy amongst most non-bumiputeras is particularly glaring during election time, when some do not even take the trouble to vote, and even those that do, usually crowd around the BN booths, in some cases leaving the DAP booths nearly destitute of voters.

I know this for a fact since I, a Malay voter voting in a pre-dominantly Chinese constituency, have been voting for DAP just so that I am able to show both MCA and BN my protest against their policies. I also know many Malays who adopt the same position.

I, for one, certainly do not subscribe to the "better the known devil than the unknown one" adage since I already know the devil and his inconsistent policies and I abhor him. I don't see the harm of voting for the alternative party - and I am a Muslim, more 'at risk' from the hudud law than non-Muslims.

However, I do wish that PAS would revise its policies on the differential treatment it would accord to all the races if it were to win this election as I believe Islam is not a racist religion and that the party should be able to look beyond racism in order to win votes.

I am also glad that PAS is offering to debate its policies with the Malaysian public, a refreshing change from the Umno policy of doing whatever they, whenever they like, wherever they like.

For all the non-bumiputera voters who are reading this, my advice is to you is to start organising yourselves politically and put your votes where your mouths are because if you continue to vote for BN or take no incentive at all to change the political climate of our beloved country, you have nobody to blame for your disgruntled lives but yourselves!
