Final solution to our road accident woes
I fully agree with K S Ong on his above views ' Road accidents: The problem is lack of enforcement ' .
I would like to add that the problem is further compounded by corruption, and irregular and seasonal enforcement on the part of the enforcement authorities and an attitude of indifference and unconcerned on the part of the road users - "It can only happen to others but not me".
Too much money had already been spent on electronic gadgets to arrest this problem but to no avail. Only the suppliers make their money whilst some officials from the authorities concerned would only be too happy to recommend for more and the latest that the market has to offer.
The final solution however lies in our self-discipline, further appreciation and understanding of the sources of dangers and strict enforcement of the traffic rules and regulations.
The duration and the distance that a driver of public transport could drive should also be stipulated. Renewal of licences should require a medical report on the state of health and mental alertness of the driver. The minimum standard of roadworthiness of vehicles that could be allowed to use the road should also be reviewed.
