Reading through Kim Quek's ' Last rites for DAP, Keadilan? ' must have been a very painful reminder to the two parties' members and supporters. It is indeed a very sad reflection of our Malaysian society.

A society which can be easily misled and deceived by a beautiful mask worn over a short period of five months. A society which failed to assess objectively the performance of the government during the period since the last election. A society which is prepared to forget the injustice done unto one of the most honourable son, let alone an ex-deputy prime minister.

Yes, Anwar Ibrahim as a person may have been forgotten and irrelevant to most Malaysians. However, the spirit of reformasi that was born in September 1999 will live on forever in the memory of those who value the meaning of life, fairness, justice and trust.

Perhaps with a better economic outlook, these matters are no longer important until another significant event occurs in the future. People are more interested in going about their life without much care of whether democracy in Malaysia is improving.

Perhaps it is not too much to put forth that without reformasi, there was no chance for us to have had more opposition reps in Parliament or in the state assemblies. At least, reformasi contributed to an improved democracy through better checks and balances.

Without reformasi, we may not have known such a good talents like Husam Musa, Takiyuddin Hassan, Dr Hassan Ali, Dr Wan Azizah just to name a few. Without reformasi, the birth of cyberspace debates, blogs or even online news may not have been so fast. Without reformasi, PAS might not have had the chance to govern Terengganu and there would be no wang ehsan .

Without reformasi, most Umno politicians may still be sleeping rather than working for the people. Without reformasi, the BN government may have been even more daring in plundering the nation's coffers.

In short reformasi has in one way or another contributed significantly towards the maturity of some if not most Malaysians who want to see a better tomorrow. The checks on corruption, cronyism etc. might have not made it to the forefront like now.

The point is, although BN in most probability is going to be returned tomorrow, the opposition needs to be given an even stronger role in the next Parliament regardless of whether they are from PAS, Keadilan or DAP.

Those from the opposition who are deemed capable of contributing effectively should be helped and assisted to be in Parliament. Otherwise, the BN government would be given an blank check.

It is pity that after 47 years of being governed by BN, most Malaysians no longer remember all the broken promises, all the injustices, all the excesses and all the ills suffered by them. Happy voting.
