The Election Commission (EC) chairman and his team should take full responsibility for the fiasco of Sunday's general election in which volumes of complaints have been lodged by both the ruling and oppositions parties about the fairness of the polls.

The old method of passing the buck doesn't hold water anymore and since the brouhaha and misgiving of the voters have been aired by those who could not vote, it would be improper for the EC chairman and his secretary to remain in office.

The chairman had made statement after statement during the campaign period which were against opposition parties while at the same turning a blind eye to electoral rule violations by the ruling coalition.

He should be impartial and possibly work more and talk less. His words show that the general election was one-sided and that he himself is on the side of the ruling coalition for reasons best to know to himself.

Elections are held every five years and the time frame is more than enough for the EC to prepare a just and fair process with which all parties will be satisfied with. Enough of the brave talk in the media about the reasons for the polls debacle.

Mr EC chairman, please accept your responsibility, be a gentleman and resign to redeem your honour. With the expertise that you have, I am sure the George W Bush administration would welcome you with open arms as he faces a tough challenge in the coming American polls this November.

He needs a landslide victory by any means to remain in office. You seem to be an expert in that field.
