Given the fact that our most important political leaders are Muslims, and in the light of the recent spate of Sedition charges, may I relate from History how the Holy Prophet Muhammad dealt even with his enemies. One example should suffice.
Malik ibn ‘Awf An-Nasry was the powerful chief of the Hawazin tribes and together with other allies he had an army of 25,000 warriors - the largest Arab army. Malik was determined to eradicate Muslims and made plans to do so. Malik was about to succeed when he was able to inflict much harm on Muslims and the Prophet’s life was in danger.
However, after a fierce conflict the Muslim forces won. The Hawazin and Thaqif tribes including Malik fled. Malik now found himself alone without wealth or tribe - a refugee in Thaqif territory, feeling insecure.
What did the Holy Prophet do? He asked after Malik. When his followers told him that Malik was in Al-Taef fort, isolated and frightened, the Holy Prophet told them to inform Malik that if he came as a Muslim, he would be given back his family, wealth and 100 camels.
Malik came and embraced Islam and the Holy Prophet accepted him without condition. Instead he was restored as the chief of the Hawazin again. He was treated as a venerable leader and was encouraged to do welfare work and not to spread corruption in the land.
If this was how the Holy Prophet treated a sworn enemy, why are Muslim leaders today who are entreated to follow the deeds and sayings of the Holy Prophet, so vindictive and so devoid of humanity towards those perceived to be against them?
