I found the tone of BlueRider's Don't Touch Our Special Rights letter most disturbing to read. It smacked of racist arrogance and despite the writer's denial, was obviously a threat, directed at citizens (non-Malays as well as Malays) who dare question Malay special privileges or 'Ketuanan Melayu'.

BlueRider says that "without the Malay votes, BN would have been easy prey for PAS" and that we would need "a united front to confront the enemies of disunity".

Firstly, it is plain nave to believe that BN would have been easy prey for PAS or any other party for that matter. BN is the only government we have ever known and, chances are, it will remain such.

Even when they lost a massive amount of Malay votes in '99, they still held on to a two-thirds majority in parliament and won 10 out of 12 states. PAS could never achieve such results, not least because Malaysians in general (Malays and non-Malays) deplore the fundamentalist (and rather absurd) stand that PAS takes.

A better stand for an opposition coalition to take is the fight for a just, democratic, pluralistic and secular Malaysia free from racial, religious divisions and unjust laws and practices. We need such an opposition to be strong, so that they can challenge the views of 'enemies of disunity' such as your goodself.

Yes BlueRider, it is people like you who cause disunity and ugliness in our country. You, with your Malay-supremacist sentiments and hatred for non-Malays whom you perceive to be little more than immigrants (overlooking the fact that we too were born here, and consider Malaysia our own country), are the true enemy of Malaysia and Malaysians.

How dare you expect those of us who are not Malay to bow down in thankfulness to you for so generously bestowing citizenship upon our undeserving ancestors and to pledge never to question any injustice for fear of upsetting people like you, our lords and masters?

I may not be Malay, but I am Malaysian. I subscribe to the ideals of liberty, justice and equality for all. I abide by the law, pay my taxes, serve my nation in whatever little way that I can and yet you have the nerve to treat me as a lesser citizen?

You talk so much of your rights and privileges as a Malay. How about my rights and privileges as a Malaysian? And by the way, PAS was not formed to protect the interests of the Malay race; rather, it was formed to propagate a certain brand of Islam. Non-Malays can be followers of Islam and members of PAS too, you know.

Finally, I want to say that I take offence at your implication that non-Malays are dishonest and also, on behalf of my Malay friends and loved ones, I wish to state that many Malays are themselves not in agreement with what you have to say and consider your letter grossly insulting and outrageous.
