I would like to respond to the letter The Utopia called Australia by Michael. I do not think Michael has given an accurate insight of what real life is like for an Asian migrant in Australia.

To many of the Australian aboriginals and Asians, the white man in Australia still regards himself as being superior to all. At least he behaves like one.

Whilst entrance to an Australian university is based on merit, could Michael point out what courses in which university in Australia (as mentioned in his letter) are 'all for free'?

Not unless you obtained a scholarship. Only state schools are free (from pre-school to year 12). But then again, there are many fund-raising activities throughout the year. Private schools are expensive.

Seeing doctors is not 'free' because there is a one percent medical levy from your income tax. You also have to buy private insurance to cover the medical surcharge if you are in the higher income group. The cost of medicine is not cheap these days. Child-care cost is also rising Down Under.

Aussie tax dollars go towards the upkeep of the unemployed, the disabled, the needy, the pensioners and those poor souls locked up in the detention camps. Some of them use the money to buy beers and prefer not to work.

It is unlawful to discriminate against anyone based on race, colour, religion or sex everywhere in the world - not just in Australia. Equal rights do not necessarily mean fair opportunity.

How high could a non-white (not just Asian) move up the Australian corporate ladder? Would the white Australians allow an Asian, a Muslim or a non-white in general - no matter how good they are - to become prime minister of Australia.? I think not.

Race is still very much an issue in Australian society. Just talk to the aboriginals. The white man has taken their land. They are the only race that can tell the white man to go back to where they came from, just as the white man sometimes tells a non-white (other than an aboriginal) to 'go home'.

In the end, beneath the claim of being multi-ethnic society, in reality, Australia is still very much a white man's world.
