Like many Malaysians, I too am outraged by the abuse of Nirmala Bonat. I, too, feel ashamed to be a Malaysian when such things can happen among educated and well-placed people.

But looking at the recommendations forwarded by the MTUC, I can see where we are not going. Their suggestion is a good one, but I do not think this should be left to the government.

The respective ministries are already bogged down with a lot of work. Why impose more work on them. I am sure there are already good laws in place, we only need to look at them again and apply them.

I believe foreign maid agencies should bear greater responsibility for the well being of maids they bring into the country.

One the one hand, it is their responsibility to see that maids are properly treated. On the other, they should also hear the complaints of employers and deal with them judiciously.

The agencies owe it to the maids and also to the employers to do a more professional job.
