Since the departure of Dr Mahathir Mohamad from the Malaysian political scene, one can see that there has been a lot of transformation in terms of the expectations of Malaysians towards the ruling politicians. These expectations are high as reflected in the results of the last general election.

Malaysia after Mahathir is a state where the fundamental rule of law has dismembered to satisfy the executive rather than to serve the people. But it is highly questionable whether Pak Lah - who won the general election with huge majority - will be brave enough to change the policies that his mentor implemented and re-establish the confidence of the people in the of judiciary and the police force.

Mahathir developed this nation and took the country to new horizons but he failed to observe fundamental rules, and this has shaken the nucleus of the Malaysian identity. Now there is obvious distrust among the people of Malaysia due to the policies implemented by Mahathir.

Mahathir clearly wanted to uplift the Malays economically through policies he made during his tenure as the prime minister of Malaysia. But by his own admission (at 2002 Umno general assembly 2002 ) he had failed his mission to change the mindset of the Malays, which were the centre of his reformation of this country.

His polices were, in fact, damaging in that no proper examination or studies were done on how they sensibly improve the lives of the people. The lack of this has further damaged the mindset of a certain segment of the population who now view the government as belonging to them only.

Pak Lah has an enormous challenge ahead of him to restore the people's confidence by either reintroducing or creating new polices which are compatible with the aspirations of all Malaysians who want the country to observe the basic rule of law.
