I was just following the general election in the United Kingdom through the BBC channel and I couldn't imagine if we would ever reach that stage of maturity in mind and deed in this country of ours. Though a former British colony and having a identical system of governance, we have never heard of the word accountability!

After David Cameron claimed an outright victory with 328 plus parliamentary seats, the leaders of the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats (Lib Dems) and the United Kingdom Independent Party (UKIP) all tendered their resignations and took the blame for their disastrous performance in the polls. Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage resigned with dignity and honour and promised to fight another day.

Taking a look at our politics here, most of our politicians don’t know what it is to be accountable. They treat the people like idiots whom they go to every four to five years to renew their stay in power. Once they are back in power, they couldn’t give the voters who put them there two hoots as to how policy decisions will effect their everyday lives.

No one ever resigns with dignity here. Even if a grave wrong has been committed, our politicians just don’t believe in resigning. Here, politics is a route and path to riches because of the power it avails you and the patronage that you can command from the favour-seekers that will line up your door step as soon as you win power.

The same leaders are recycled again and again in different roles, the losers can still become cabinet members via the senate. The losers are even given positions with ministerial status and sent as envoys abroad. Some losers and defectors are made ambassadors and become representatives of the country in other nations, and the list goes on and on. I am sure that the politicians there are envious of our great unaccountable leaders here.

I was just noticing the way in which the returning officer from the Election Commission or conducting authority make the announcements of the winners in a very fair and honourable manner.

We see mature campaigning, we see people coming to hear their leaders speak, we don’t see the police tearing down the campaign material of the opposition parties, we don’t see violence from either side of the political divide when campaigning and most of all we see a very neutral and dedicated civil service who keep the machinery of government functioning whilst the care takergovernment seeks another term from the people.

Ours is a far cry and are just not meant to be compared. We don’t need to talk about our Election Commission. They actions and decisions speaks for itself. Our police force is a total washout, they have become the armed and uniformed guards and protectors of the chosen leaders from the party that believes in perpetual power. They hound opposition politicians and activists giving an impression that, that is what they are actually there for.

Not understanding neutral policing

Neutral policing is something which they just can’t comprehend. Discretion, reasonable administrative decision-making are skills which are just not in their manuals of service and practice.

Yet when we compare, we see the police there being as effective as the people would want them to be and at the same time, policing with fairness, equality before the law and good discretion.

They are able to keep a lid and an eye on prospective terrorist activity or activism and are able to catch paedophiles who keep mannequins of young boys in their rooms. If you were to compared it to our force, they just seem to be very determined to keep one individual with a very ‘virile and erect phallus’ capable of penetrating even the hardest concrete walls on the planet safely behind bars so that things can go as usual!  

So looking at it as a whole, our colonisers have evolved and matured into great democracies whereas we have gone down the spiral and are now at the verge of autocracy. Have we learnt? I don’t think so. Will we ever? Only God will be able to tell. It will all depend on the rise of the progressive Malays who will be able to govern with equality and meritocracy as opposed to race and religion.
