The fireflies at Kampung Kuantan must have ignited a spark, and now that the three-night camping trip is over for the Selangor state exco, what is the result? One must not be sarcastic or cynical over the directive of the menteri besar of Selangor in suggesting a camping trip to brainstorm the plight of the fireflies.

Many large corporate bodies have similar trips to brainstorm the company's problems. I am sure the menteri besar suggested the trip as he finds his team slow and unproductive in coming out with brilliant solutions in the comfort of their office.

Of course, taxpayers money will have to be spent but if there is a solution to save the fireflies, it is money well-used.

The question now at the top of every Malaysian is whether the Selangor exco has identified the problem and come up with a solution to save those creatures or has the trip been another blinking free holiday at the expense of the taxpayers' money?

When HRM Sultan of Selangor highlighted the problem, special trees were planted along the rivers where the fireflies make their habitat. Environmentalists and experts had highlighted very clearly that the main reason of the declining population of the fireflies was due to the pollution of the nearby rivers.

You do not need a rocket scientist to tell the Selangor mentri besar that if you solve the river pollution problem, you will save the fireflies. By my wildest imagination, I cannot imagine how the state exco, none of whom are experts in the field, can come up with any other solution to save those poor creatures.
