As a Malaysian statesman Ling Liong Sik obviously knows what he has said and what he has to say. Ling is very clear in his views in all matters. Ling will not and has no necessity do so just to ‘take sides’ or to harbour any secret agenda to remove anyone in office.

For Chua Soi Lek to comment that Ling has an axe to grind over the recent Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) case clearly shows he does not know or understand the character as well as the values of Ling Liong Sik.

One of the reasons Ling was elected MCA president for almost 20 years is because he is a leader who has always ensured the interest of the MCA, Barisan Nasional and Malaysia. He has always been magnanimous and never keeps vengeance against anyone including his political opponents and those who have betrayed his trust.

Chua’s further comment that it was only because of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement that Ling was acquitted in the PKFZ case already clearly shows his lack of understanding and knowledge of the PKFZ court proceedings.

Like all the other witnesses, Mahathir was requested by the High Court to tell the truth and disclose the facts behind the purchase of the PKFZ land. Based on the facts and the truth that prevailed, Ling was found not guilty by the High Court.

All witnesses called have given evidence to the High Court. Two financial experts explained to the court the financial calculation with regards to the land price. Several cabinet ministers including the then-prime minister were called to explain as to what actually transpired and discussed in cabinet meetings in relation to the PKFZ land.

There were documents produced and other witnesses that gave evidence to establish the truth and the facts of the case. It was based on these that the High Court acquitted Ling.
