I refer to your news report Speaker Ramli gets BA votes .

I see no reason for any MP to have voted for Ramli Ngah Talib as Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat as he is definitely not a clean man in the first place. Secondly, there weren't any ideas, plans, initiatives or proposals from Ramli to improve the performance of the Dewan.

Based on this alone, none of the MPs should have voted for him. If we were to go by basic principles, if a person is to be elected to hold a post, he has to explain to the people why he should be voted in.

Like an election campaign, you got to make people understand your policies, your efforts, and most important your manifesto. In Ramli's case, the fellow suddenly got elected and without even his ideas and plans being known.

Of course, I expected the Barisan Nasional MPs to vote for Ramli. The most I dared expect was that some BN MPs would abstain from voting.

But I certainly did not expect any opposition MPs to vote for a candidate that has not even mentioned a single word about his planned work or proposals. To me, this is totally illogical, unacceptable, unreasonable and unthinkable.

According to one PAS MP, he said he found Ramli credible - is this a sane statement?

All the MPs should have voted for the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat based on the merit, record and performance of the candidates nominated. There was no need for any secret deals between opposing parties.

The significance of Ramli's election is far more bigger than just a political stunt. It is sad that the PAS and Keadilan opposition representatives failed to realise this and voted blindly instead of abstaining.

The behaviour of these opposition MPs has cast doubt on the sincerity of the Barisan Alternatif in charting a course for a just Malaysia. The election of the Dewan Rakyat speaker has shown that they may not be as reliable as thought.

The way BA conducted themselves in Ramli's election will just make harder the journey towards having a stronger opposition. Harder due to a lack of commitment - not from others but from BA itself.
