The upward adjustment of LRT and Monorail fares which saw Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) likewise announced higher charges with effect from Dec 2, 2015, the hike in the fares for its monthly passes are a cause for concern for public transport users.

The consecutive increase of public transport fares have met with a public outcry and complaints of its far-reaching effect. This surely impacts the people’s financial standing, especially the lower-income group.

Public transport is a necessary facility to the people. And it is the choice of majority due to the cheaper fares and convenience. With the ever-increasing cost of living, the people’s financial burden also rise. When some commuters opt for other means of transport due to the recent fare jump, it will worsen the operators’ financial bottom-line, resulting in a lose-lose situation.

As such, we suggest that transport operators must find ways to retain passengers and improve service quality to maintain their sustainability. Without service improvement, fare hikes will only drive the existing passengers away and result in a situation where nobody benefits.

The related operators when considering fare climbs to reduce income deficit, must also endeavour to increase public transport usage. They should never depend on government subsidy or fare escalation to lower losses as this is not the way businesses should be run. We feel that increase in efficiency, comfort, convenience and frequency would be able to attract more passengers.
