I refer to ‘Mandatory commercial insurance for Uber, Grab drivers mulled’ and say it is about time.

It’s my humble opinion that the first priority of our elected government is to look out for the interests of all Malaysians and not the specific interest of any group, in this case the taxi drivers association.

Our taxi service is bad, now someone from a land far, far away has come out with a simple solution that is being embraced warmly by all and sundry except taxi drivers themselves.

What is the big issue if an Uber vehicle is illegal and unlicensed? Just make it licensed? After all many Malaysians want and need it. Taxi drivers suddenly seem very concerned about the safety of Uber passengers as they are not covered by insurance. Really? Have they looked at the state of their cars and the way they drive generally and then put their hand on their heart and decide which is more dangerous?

Another complaint is that Uber drivers’ costs are cheaper as they don’t have to pay for a licence and car lease payment.

My suggestion is, give up your taxi and sign up with Uber and you can benefit from the good reputation of Uber’s business, too. Then there is the easiest way to defeat Uber at its own game, keep your taxi super clean, drive courteously, don’t be rude to passengers and don’t overcharge. Surely these attributes can’t be that difficult? So don’t moan about Uber, look in the mirror first (together with your taxi).
