In the aftermath of the tsunami, millions of ringgit have been collected and contributed to the various charitable funds set up for the purpose of relieving the plight of the victims. The generosity of Malaysians in responding to the needs of these suffering people is applaudable.

With the collection of these huge sums of money, public accountability is of utmost importance. I believe every single donor has the right to know where the money is being channeled to. It is imperative that a complete fiscal report on the collection and channeling of the funds is made public through the media so that the public knows there is no taint of impropriety.

Also, the government should inform the public as to the total amount of money collected so far and as to whether the collected amount is already sufficient or there is still a shortfall in terms of providing for the basic needs of the victims.

The public should also know the identity of the various people and departments handling these funds. An independent audit verification of the funds should also be conducted to ensure integrity at all levels.

This public accountability will encourage more people to contribute as they will be assured that their fund are playing an effective role.
