I would like to refer to the letter What's so bad about US global hegemony?

I'm taken aback by the writer's comments which seems to state that the US has the moral right to dictate and impose its will on others by virtue of it being the richest and strongest country in the world.

This reminds us starkly of the colonial era where the European colonists, led by England, humiliated and imposed their will on us poorer and much less developed countries. The scars left by the colonists have yet to heal completely, especially for China, which only just recently had Hong Kong and Macau returned to it.

It is never alright to humiliate and impose one's will on anybody, whatever the reasons. This is the 21st century. We can use diplomacy, external pressure and even trade sanctions (approved by UN).

But just because one country is much richer, much more developed and militarily much stronger does not give it the right to impose its will and hegemony over others. On a personal level, would we like it if some rich and powerful person imposed his will over us as an individual?

This was the same philosophy that England and the other European countries used in colonising other countries in the second half of the last millennium. Sadly, in some places, this colonisation has not yet ended.
