I am alarmed to hear of the 'forced resignation' of Dr Edmund Terence Gomez.

Having read for years his outstanding work and benefitted from his generous advice during a recent research project in Malaysia, I can only agree with Bridget Welsh that unless the decision to dismiss him is swiftly reversed, Malaysia's social sciences will have lost one their greatest contributors.

Scholars of Gomez's calibre and dedication are irreplaceable.
