Never a day passes without some smart alec bureaucrat in Malaysia coming out with some bizarre idea that belies belief, fit only for Alice in Wonderland type scenarios.

Let me just list down some of which are my favourites as far as this reverse brilliance goes (though not in order of priority lest it upset the originators of these ideas):

- e - mail addresses for newborns ;

- Fingerprinting and footprinting babies at birth ;

- Negaraku to be sang at cinemas before the start of movies;

- After-dark curfew for kids to curb undesirable activities;.

- Separate queues at supermarkets for males and females;

- Obtaining your neighbour's consent for keeping a dog;

- Preventing students from studying in foreign universities and

- Employers must be of same religion as the maids they employ.

Some of the above ideas have been justifiably dumped, but as for the remaining, who says Malaysia is lacking in the area of intellectual development and innovation?

Sarcasm aside, the inanity of all the above is balanced when once in a while, a truly excellent idea is put forth. I refer specifically to the 'one person, one vote' initiative being pushed by Umno Vice-president Muhyiddin Yassin.

It is an absolutely diabolical state of affairs that when in a democracy, we have national leaders who were not really elected by the majority of their own party. Why would anyone would not support the one person, one vote system is, to me, beyond comprehension.

To against it would be to perpetuate the 'delegate' monstrosity which has led to widespread abuse including money politics, vote buying and abuse of power. In the present system, one can bribe 200 delegates but with the one person, one vote system, how does one bribe 600,000 party members?

Let us all support Muhyiddin in his effort and watch out for those who don't. These detractors are the true enemies of democracy.
