The Malaysian Airlines Employees Union (Maseu) has done it again. This time, they have signed an agreement with MAS to do away with the provision of transport facilities for their cabin crew.

MAS has been providing transport facilities to its cabin crew since 1972. Many a time, our daughter is required to travel with three pieces of baggage for flight duties. Not only that, there are also times when she and her colleagues are required to travel to and from the airport in the early hours of the morning or late at night. We are very concerned about the safety of our daughter, in the absence of official transport options provided by MAS.

We are puzzled as to the duties of Maseu. A trade union is supposed to protect the interests and welfare of its members. In this case, it looks like the union has 'sold off' a benefit which is of vital importance to its members.

The Employment Act provides for the protection and safety of female employees, by ensuring that employers provide transport to those required to work between the hours of 10pm and 7am.

We have also been made to understand that the culprits of this latest development are the same union officials who have been implicated with the missing RM1 million from the union's funds.

Are these the kind of leaders we are supposed to look to for the welfare and interests of those who are employed by MAS? Maseu, wake up and do your job. Let this not be a case of 'Harapkan pagar, pagar makan padi'.
