I have read with interest the letter entitled Free needles: Why refer to Fatwa Council?

The argument put forward by the author of the letter is that Majlis Fatwa is an unelected body, and hence there is no need for the government to refer the matter of free needles and condoms for drug addicts to the Majlis Fatwa.

If that is the argument, then we should not refer any cases to the courts. None of the judges there have been elected. They are all appointed by the Yang Di Pertuan Agong. So are the presidents of the consumers and housing tribunals.

It is important to emphasise that Malaysia is an Islamic state. Hence if a particular issue is related to the Syariah, then the government should refer the matter to the Majlis Fatwa.
