I refer to the report Hell at police station for 14-year-old suspect. What an ordeal for a 14-year-old boy. Obviously we have people within the police force who have no understanding of the rules and regulations under which they have to operate. Such officers are sadists and psychopaths and it is time that our police force face such realities.

Until such officers are hauled up and made to pay for their crimes, the seriousness of professional conduct will not be driven home. Such officers are not even good men for if they believe in God, they will not treat even criminals in this way. There are professional ways of dealing with such issues and the police needs to train its personnel in this.

But one is not surprised when even Saudara Anwar Ibrahim can get a black eye. He has now secured his apology and compensation. What about this 14-year-old? The police need to get real and this has to come from the top.

Such flagrant violations are a reflection of attitudes prevalent at the top of the force. It reflects their interests and convictions. The Police Royal Commission report remains an indictment against their leadership of the force. However, in feudal Malaysia, they keep on getting honoured.

All this begs the question of when the Police Royal Commission's recommendations are going to be implemented so that our force becomes professional and accountable.
