As Malaysians celebrate our National Day on Aug 31, let us reflect on the blessings that the Almighty has given us. Our nation's infrastructure is of first-class standard but our citizens' mindset is still stuck in feudal times thinking when it comes to maintenance and repairs.

The gap between the rich and poor is widening and with the poor struggling to pay their bills with the increasing prices of foodstuff, tolls and fuel. It make ones cringe to hear of new tycoons who can arrive at their golf games in helicopters.

But while other countries who have achieved independence before us underwent despair and bad economic conditions due to poor leadership and corruption, ours can be considered a success country with different races and cultures celebrating their difference and living in peace and harmony.

However, we cannot rest on our laurels as there is still room for improvement. Corruption and abuse of power highlighted by the press should be minimised or totally eliminated. The high and mighty that abuse their power for personal gain should be held accountable for their misdeeds and brought to justice as a lesson to others.

The 'playing field' should be kept level for those from rural areas to minimise the gap between the rich and poor. One way to eliminate this gap is through a revamp of our education system which seems to be in a state of uncertainty.

The poor in rural areas cannot compete with their rich cousins in the cities as rural schools lack basic amenities. There is also the problem of schoolchildren from poor families dropping out to work help their parents make ends meet.

If we compare ourselves to our neighbours (except Singapore) we can be proud that our country is a success story. But if we are to be a nation with pride and dignity, then the ills of society need to be addressed urgently.

Corruption, cronyism, nepotism and abuse of power by the educated few are but some of the many ills that will tip our nation into the dark abyss of 'failed Third world countries' if they are not addressed soon.

Yes, let us raise our flags come Aug 31 but let us also pray hard that our leaders learn from past mistakes and are able steer our ship to a safer harbour by being God fearing and honest leaders who earn the respect of the masses by practicing what they preach. Amen.
