LETTER | Many Malaysians believe that we need a change in regime. We need to adapt ourselves to this ever-changing world and be prepared for any disaster that might come. I could not agree more.

We all agree that there is a very big problem with our current government. Corruption, and crime, secrets, and lies. Yes, we need a better future for ourselves and our children so we need someone to guide us into a better tomorrow.

So here comes the opposition party. Playing the part as hope-bringer, the hope for us Malaysians for a brighter future than our current government.

Recently, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has become opposition’s biggest hope lead this country onto the right path.

Many would say, he has led Malaysia well (back when social media was non-existent) so why not?

However, some would say that throughout his years as prime minister, he oppressed minorities in the country and was the root of all evil when it comes to racism. And, let us not forget, he was the one who started off Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy case, so no way!

While there are a group of millennials who did not live through the era of Tun's dictatorship and might perhaps say, "We forgive you, Tun; we believe that you have changed and are now trying your best to bring us back on track, so let’s forget what you have done and move on."

Forgiveness is well and good but let us not forget. There is a reason why history classes are conducted. We should not forget our past so that history will not repeat itself.

Put it this way, thinking that it is a good idea for Mahathir to return to his power is akin to supporting Mugabe because he had joined the opposition after being sacked by the people of Zimbabwe or asking Chen Sui Bian to be president of Taiwan again after he is released from jail.

We all desperately need a change for a greater good.

But if we support something just for the sake of getting rid of what we have, is it worth it? Some might say; if you never try, we might never know.

On the flip side, that change we so desperately hope for? It just might make our life worse.
