Ex-Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar and Federal Territories Minister Isa Samad and Kota Baru MP Zaid Ibrahim are two Umno big names whose suspensions from the party were confirmed by the party's supreme council.

As Malaysian citizens - particularly the Malays - we have a locus standi, to raise this issue further. The question is if Isa's election victory as the top vice-president has been declared invalid due to his alleged use of money to buy votes, then the whole Umno elections should be declared invalid and a new election be called.

More than 1,000 delegates voted for Isa for the vice-presidency. This is about half the total delegates. The same delegates also cast their votes for the election of Umno supreme council members.

Since their votes were deemed to be invalid for Isa then what about the votes for the other two vice-presidents, Melaka Chief Minister Ali Rustam and Agriculture Minister Muhyuddin Yassin. Muhyuddin was far from happy when he came in third and if I were him, I would like to gain new legitimacy through fresh elections.

So to those who got elected to the supreme council members with the exception of Information Minister Kadir Sheikh Fadzir, Higher Education Minister Shafie Salleh and Home Affairs Minister Azmi Khalid. They couldn't believe it when the results were announced.

The chain of events may mean the end of their political careers because in the coming cabinet reshuffle, they may even be dropped due to a 'lack of standing' in the party.

Perhaps a court of law could be asked to decide on the issue of the tainted Umno elections. Isa and Zaid may want to do this especially if the duo strongly feel they were made scapegoats.

But such court action can be good for Abdullah Ahamd Badawi who wants to see cleanliness, honesty, openness and transparency in his stewardship of both the government and Umno. Also, it will be good for Umno.
