In Malaysia, the practice of land grabbing and other related crimes are commonplace. Why is this? The civil servants are corrupt and the politicians are also real devils. Stealing land, money or the properties of others will not happen if we have hudud laws.
If somebody grabs your property, how would you feel if his or her hands are chopped? Only thieves and their like should fear hudud laws. Alas, Malaysian prefer to be naked and unprotected despite what the Islamic system can provide.
Having Islamic laws does not mean everyone has got to be a Muslim. Far from it. If Malaysians can adopt Islamic laws, Malaysians don't need to live in fear. Just look around you. All houses and shops are all boarded up with grills. They look ugly and are sometimes downright dangerous if you are trapped inside in case of a fire.
You walk on the streets, some thugs grab your bags. You park your car and it can disappear in minutes. Is this the kind of environment that we want to persist in Malaysia?
Let me suggest what is possible. Let's say people are given the option to subscribe to either the current civil laws (for crime) or the syariah (hudud laws only). Let say we have three typical Malaysian criminals - Mat, Ah Seng and Samy.
Let's say these three are inclined to crime but are not driven by poverty or some other forgivable reasons. Now if Mat were to rob a Muslim or a non-Muslim, he will get his hand chopped. Non-Muslims shall not complain. This step will greatly discourage a Muslim from stealing. The non-Muslim communities are automatically protected from Muslim criminals. Good so far?
Now, If Ah Seng or Samy were to rob a non-Muslim, their penalty will be as is provided by the present Criminal Procedure Code. Happy? But if Ah Seng or Samy were to steal from a Muslim, then they encroach into the domain of the Muslim.
As the Muslim is the victim, the Muslim can call the shots as how to have the trial handled. If the Muslim victims want it the Muslim way, then let it be. In this way, non-Muslim criminals dare not touch the properties of the Muslim. Think about it; how safe it will be for us.
All the ideas of the Islamic state is to provide protection for all its citizens and not to force people to become Muslims.
All the problems of corruption we have in Malaysia is because our system of punishing criminals is simply too kind towards the criminals and unjust to the victims. This state of affairs is encouraging others to commit more crime.
