LETTER | I join hands with the rest of the nation in congratulating the newly minted attorney general. May God bless and assist him in all his undertakings. I wonder why some have so many issues with a non-Malay non-Muslim taking up a key position.

Never before in recent memory has an AG with such credentials come to the office and we all hope that he will right the wrongs of the past and uphold the good name of his office.

It’s ridiculous to suggest that an AG must only come from someone from the bench, either past or present. It’s common in the US that judges are promoted from AGs, rarely the other way around.

A judge makes his decision based on arguments from both sides and his knowledge of the law, whereas an AG writes up a brief either to try and convict someone or to defend the government from lawsuits against it.

An AG's role is more adversarial in nature as compared to a judge who is more balanced and judgemental in nature. After a long time on the bench, a judge may not be that well-suited to take up an adversarial role but hey, that’s only my layman brain at work here.

Regardless, His Majesty has consented and everything is merely a moot point now. It’s up to the new AG to now prove his mettle and not let down Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Pakatan Harapan government who have stuck their necks out for him.

I would humbly request that the new AG look at the following cases again with a fresh eye:

· Did the previous AG break any law in clearing the previous PM from any wrongdoing on the 1MDB matter?

· Reopen the investigation into the death of Teoh Beng Hock

· Reopen the investigation into the death of Altantuya Shaariibuu

· Review the arrest under Sosma of Khairuddin Abu Hassan, Matthias Chang and Maria Chin Abdullah and ascertain if there had been any abuse of power by the relevant personnel

· Reopen the investigation into the National Feedlot Corporation

· Inquire from the MACC as to what has happened to the investigation on Mara's overseas property purchases

· Follow up on the police report made on the dealings involving Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan

· Cooperate with the French investigators on the Scorpene submarine purchases

· Ascertain if the former deputy PM had indeed met the donor of the cash found in the previous PM’s account

· Ascertain if the Income Tax Department broke laws and natural justice by their hard-line approach in getting taxpayers to cough up more and if this is in anyway tied to the bonus on performance after the department was corporatised.

· Initiate fresh investigation on the many people who have gone missing in Malaysia

· Investigate all past ministers and officials who claimed that there was no money missing or syphoned off from IMDB to ascertain if they were actively covering up or merely following orders.

· Investigate how did Jamal Yunos escape police supervision in a hospital and the immigration at the border

· Investigate how did Musa Aman leave the country without immigration record showing such a departure

· Investigate all the obnoxious acts of those who were untouchable in the past
