Many maimed for life by Bali Bomber
I refer to the letter Days of the West numbered .
Some of us individuals in the 'third' world may not have much appreciation of what the 'first' world represents today, but gee-whiz, aren't we are in the midst of copying wholesale everything from the West?
Design, culture, clothes, food, attitudes, habits, the list goes on. The Internet, Hollywood movies and the media use the English language as a stamp for Western cultural thought and ideas which slip easily into our subconscious on a daily basis.
Is that so wrong? After all, we do have the individual freedom to choose and tribal considerations do count!
Unfortunately, in rebelling against the 'first' world, Malaysian Azahari Husin stooped to vile murder. Mass murder. Through indiscriminate bombings he extinguished many innocent lives before their time, most cruelly . Do spare a thought for all those maimed for life.
Azahari could have the used spoken words and writings to preach his alternate way for wasn't he a lecturer once? However, he chose violence.
One way to counter Western 'cultural imperialism' (a modern catch-all catch-phrase) is to study the practice in our own cultures. Changes in attitudes away from Western influence do not necessarily mean we should steer ourselves to 'closed minds'.
