There is now a need for Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists to be aware that manufacturers of soft candy in Malaysia are increasingly turning to gelatin of beef extract in the preparation of soft candy. This is done so as to obtain the 'Halal' certification.
Unfortunately, this has created unease in the Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist communities as this gelatin is 'haram' from their religious point of view.
I therefore see that there is now an urgent need for either government regulations to bar the use of gelatin of animal/bovine extract in the preparation of soft candy or a similar form of 'Halal' certification for the peace of mind of Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists.
Until then, no kid of mine will be allowed to go shopping and I will scrutinise every item bought for this offending ingredient. I will also educate my kids to look out for this 'hidden danger'
