Destroying the environment to feed golf course mania

LETTER | It is most shocking to read about the latest rape of the Malaysian topography. It seems that some 800ha of a mangrove forest reserve is now being 'transformed into a Golf City'. Can you believe it?

Despite there being more than 200 golf courses dotted around the country, our leaders and the power brokers are certainly not stopping there.

Despite the B40 and working middle class struggling to have affordable or even subsidized homes, we have no qualms over raping our pristine mangrove habitats to create playgrounds for the rich and well-connected.

Despite the miserable and poorly maintained tiny pockets of recreational playgrounds for the masses, we have the audacity to just add yet another golf course to the existing 200 plots.

And mind you, a golf course in the Sungai Pulai Forest Reserve is to feed the controversial Forest City Development in Johor that is said to be the size of 1,200 football fields.

Indeed we should ask if this nation is being managed by greed and autocratic power for the sole wealth creation of a few.

All this while many Malaysians face financial squeezes, pathetic social amenities and State neglect.

Can the government of the day and its leaders who promised to redress the sins of the past please explain to its citizens just what the game plan is?

This golf course mania must stop.
