Mother Nature has finally wrecked havoc to the state capital of Selangor with the a torrent of rainfall which caused financial ruin to those who are living in Shah Alam on that wet Sunday morning of Feb 26. The so-called developed state of this country had the ignominy of having their state capital besieged by floods due to poor planning of their local government, which approved a lot of housing projects without a thought for nature.

One doesn't have to be a scientist to know that excess development which upset the eco-balance of the flora and fauna contributes to destructive weather patterns which devastate both life and property.

One can really empathise with the folks at Shah Alam who not only have lost their personal belongings and have to spend a small fortune to repair their damage but get the double whammy of seeing their properties dip in value as people would not want to buy a second-hand properties which are prone to flash floods. As the Malay saying goes, "Dah jatuh ditimpa tangga".

Cameron Highlands is facing a ecology disaster due to excess development while Segamat folk are living in danger due to toxic waste dumps. Our river and sea fronts are in a dire straits due to indiscriminate waste dumping by people who want a short-cut to quick profits yet our government agencies seems to be paralysed in doing anything to stop the rot.

Green areas are being converted to concrete jungles, while hills are being flattened and old trees which can prevent floods are being felled without mercy. All this greed will eventually make our towns and cities prone to flash floods, mudslides and other natural disasters which can cause fatal accidents.

One tends to think that our local enforcement officers are either on the take or turning a blind eye to the misdeeds of these greedy few. Or there may be powerful political figures working in cohort with those in the housing industry, guaranteeing them immunity from the law.

Our government should open its eyes to the folly of disturbing Mother Nature who will strike back with a vengeance if we disturb our eco-balance due to excess development.

History is full of lessons of nations which fell to despair due to corrupt politicians and officials destroying their natural heritage due to greed. Our nation seems to be heading to that direction.
