Nazri Abdul Aziz, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, in calling the demonstration in Penang 'a stupid act' seems to forget that the demonstrators were merely exercising their constitutional right to peacefully demonstrate against those opposing the syariah.
I do not for one moment think that there is a lack of protection for the rights of minorities in this country. If the recent cases have brought up conflicts in law and jurisdiction, then the government, which seems to have taken cognisance of these issues, should establish mechanisms to resolve these conflicts, without having to amend or reinterpret the Constitution to marginalise the syariah judicial system.
It would be wise if the minister concerned went about doing this then calling legitimate protestors 'stupid'.
Article 11's petition to reaffirm the supremacy of the Federal Constitution is only a guise to call for the subordination of the syariah in this country. This is evident from their criticism of Article 12 (1) (A) as being an 'ill conceived amendment to the Constitution' and for review powers to be given to the civil courts over Syariah Court decisions.
Does this not show that their petition is a Trojan horse to displace the syariah? Article 11 is not being transparent about this but we can definitely smell a rat.
