Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) should consider exploring the usage of alternative fuels to produce electricity in order to save on production cost and not raise electricity rates tariff.

This is a most testing time and one of extreme difficulties for consumers what with the recent increase in oil prices and the impending 12 percent increase of electricity rates to be imposed by TNB.

TNB should consider using alternative fuels instead of depending solely on fossil gas/diesel fuel to produce electricity. They should consider using used engine oil and used cooking oil to produce electricity. Alternatively, they also should set up modern incinerators near existing giant garbage and rubbish dumps in the country in order to safely consume the mountains of waste (free fuel) and generate electricity at the same time.

These are the most environmentally and socially-friendly initiatives available to Malaysian society and TNB should contribute to this cause as an excellent corporate citizen. If they are using fossil diesel fuel, they should consider using palm oil bio-diesel instead.

Since TNB is a very big consumer, they should have the critical mass and could use the said fuel alternatives successfully at a lower cost owing to the fact they consume large quantities. Therefore, they could lower their costs of production from the said alternatives fuels owing to the economy of scale which is inherent in the critical mass of the nation's sole electricity supplier.
