Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had done a lot to develop Malaysia to what it is today. This is something that Malaysians should be proud of. The rakyat knows that money needed to be spent to develop the country. And presumably Mahathir wanted to see that what he planned got implemented by his successor.

But, the question is should mega-projects be implemented even if the rakyat stands to lose more than gain? Can the government or ministers assure the rakyat that the contracts are fair and not biased toward the contractors? Will the government or ministers step forward and be accountable if there is any misconduct?

For those mega-projects like the Plus highway and the IPPs, just to mention a few, the contracts signed are disadvantaged to the government. Heavy compensation was paid to the contractors. The rakyat wants to know why. Many questions have been asked and many calls to government to be transparent and have the contract details made public. Till today, the questions are not answered properly to the satisfaction of the rakyat.

Now that Mahathir is on the rakyat's side, it is hoped that the questions would get satisfactory answers instead of just political talk. Let us have the government or ministers accountable for their actions. Public money should be put to proper use for development of the country rather than being siphoned by the contractors.
