Based on the handling and the expected results of last Thursday's campus election, is it any wonder if our leaders of tomorrow turn out to be clones of our presently elected ones?

Minister of Higher Education Mustapa Mohamed, a first-class honours graduate of Australia's Monash University, endorsed the process as the most transparent ever and yet refused to deal with questions alleging government interference.

The tragedy is that the ones who know the actual truth are those who are now the elected student leaders. They have just learnt that it is alright to bully, it is alright to lie and it is alright to surrender one's autonomy, in return for patronage and power. The student bodies also learnt about how to deal with covert threats in a manner that safeguard immediate interests by perfunctorily participating in a sham.

A continuing process of political socialisation that breeds leaders ala Don Quixote and the Knights of La Mancha, among mentally-meek and educationally-handicapped populace that will have to take on the acutely competitive world of their future. Boy, do we stand a chance!

Congratulations Minister, I hope your victory is worthy of your Monash degree. I dread it when the Oxbridge boys get their turn!
