I refer to the letter No more Happy Deepavali? criticising an insurance company in town for sending out an email warning to its Muslim staff not to wish its Hindu customers anything apart from Selamat Hari Raya. Many non-Muslims are up in arms over this. I think it is the wrong approach to take.

I am of the opinion we should just not make a big deal out of this. It is their right to do so if we believe in freedom of speech and religion. Why should the rest of us get upset? If someone wants to be a zealot and show their lack of understanding of issues of depth, who are we to criticise them? Let them be holed up in whichever comfort zone that suits them.

What the rest of us should do if we really are offended by it is to stop patronising that particular insurance company and all of the other companies related to it as that particular company is a group of companies of a financial group.

There are many other financial services providers, especially the multinational ones who will fall over backward wishing us on our festive seasons and will even give us free goodies.

This particular group doesn't want to wish us as it may corrupt them and make them commit as sin by their religion. Let us help them even further by taking our business elsewhere. They are, in fact, telling us to not patronise them.

As a law-abiding and tolerant citizen, therefore, we should just help our brethren in this manner. Why get annoyed and angry with them? It is their right to practice as they wish.
