I write with regards to Zara Davies Abdul Rahman's letter and am angered to learn that a fellow Malaysian has been so badly let down by his peers. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

It's a well known fact that the highest cause of mortality for young Malaysians comes from road accidents. Malaysia boasts of highways that are among the best in the world but unfortunately, the system employed in designing them, particularly for directions and emergency response, is appalling as Zara Davies has rightly identified. These flaws must be addressed.

I would also like to point out that what was more unpalatable to me was learning that there are idiots who are more concerned about bloodstains in their precious cars than helping a dying man. This plus the lack of concern from individuals who were able to assist during the most critical periods of an emergency.

Why is this? I remember very vividly that there was a time when Malaysians were always looking out for their fellow man. What has happened? When did we become so apathetic? Have we as a society lost our moral compass?

The main reason that Zara Davies endured a painfully frustrating time trying to aid an accident victim was not due to the lack of available help, but due to the presence of those who could help but refused to do so. Because of this, a young man lost his life.
